Knives: Multi-Tools

Multi-tools come with a variety of different components, making them multi-functional. Some of the tools that make up a multi-tool set include: serrated knife, straight knife, wire cutters, needle nose pliers, screwdrivers, corkscrew, can opener, file, ruler, keychain attachment, scissors and many more useful tools. Each tool tucks away safely in the metal body and some come with a carry pouch.

Multi-Tools: Boker

Boker Knives of Solingen, Germany has been producing knives and tools for over a century, and today they are one of the foremost knife makers in the world.

There is a giant chestnut tree, shading the small Boker tool factory  in Remscheid, Germany. Planted in the 17th century, is the oldest traceable symbol connected with the Boker name. The tree is incorporated into their logo. Like that tree, Boker knives have stood the test of time.

The Boker name is synonymous with quality.

Boker Knives offers their traditional Tree Brand folders in popular styles like Trappers, Stockman and Canoe models, as well as the Applegate Fighting Daggers, Tactical Liner Locking Folding Knives, and kitchen cutlery, too.

The story of Boker knives has not been without setbacks, however. During WWII, the Boker factory in Solingen burned to the ground. Nothing survived. Yet the loyal, skilled workers who had survived the war returned to Solingen, where they came together to rebuild the company to its former glory, eventually regaining the previous reputation for Boker quality.

Today, Boker knives range from 320-layer Damascus steel to very
modern ceramics, with handles ranging from high-quality mother-of-pearl, to Thuya root wood, and state-of-the-art synthetics.

In fact, Boker was the first company to come out with a ceramic knife, which can retain a sharp edge longer than even steel. In fact, many of the world’s finest chefs prefer Boker ceramic blades, due to their anti-microbial properties, which are important in food preparation.

Thanks to constant modernization and expansion of product lines, Boker strives to constantly push the envelope in design and material innovation. A Boker knife is a well-made tool with a long, rich history that will last a lifetime.

Multi-Tools: Camillus

The Camillus Cutlery Compan had been one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States, having roots dating back to 1876. The company produced millions of knives, but eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2007, citing fierce Chinese competition as the reason. The Camillus company was a throwback to an era  when American companies competed with each
other to make their product BETTER than the next company. Today, sadly, companies only seem to strive to make their products cheaper. As a result, product quality suffers, and Americans lose jobs.
The company was started by a German immigrant, Adolph Kastor, and Camillus knives were valued for their high grade steel and quality craftsmanship. Camillus knives, if you can find them today,  are far superior in quality than their overseas counterparts. You can tell just from holding one in your hand.

In February 2007, the product lines and intellectual property of the Camillus company were acquired by Acme United Corporation in a bankruptcy auction for $200,000.00
Acme United relaunched Camillus Cutlery at the 2009 National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.
If you can find a Camillus knife today, you know you have a quality piece of American made history; a throwback from a bygone era.

Multi-Tools: Cold Steel

Cold Steel was founded in Ventura, California in 1980 by company president Lynn C. Thompson.

Cold Steel knives represent real, solid value for the money, backed by their unconditional
30-day .  guarantee of complete satisfaction. Cold Steel knives often are razor sharp right out of the box. There is a wide array of styles offered by Cold Steel. They’ve designed knives to accommodate any purpose, from tactical and utility to hunting and culinary. Cold steel knives are high quality, well made, sharp and dependable. The company even offers samurai swords

Known for their tempering and quenching process of hardening steel, Cold Steel knives are trusted the world over. The company is also known for their unique approach to marketing. They distribute a DVD, free of charge, wherein they demonstrate their knives by piercing car hoods, using tactical folder handles as “monkey bars” to demonstrate the strength of their locking mechanisms, slicing through free-hanging pieces of meat and manila rope with a single stroke, and slamming their knives with a hammer in a vice. Through all this, the knives, amazingly, retain their point and edge.

Cold Steel offers high quality products at reasonable prices.

Multi-Tools: Gerber

Ask knife enthusiasts all over the country what they think about the reputation of Gerber. Some of the words you’ll undoubtedly hear back from them will be: quality, strength, durable, and long-lasting, not to mention heavy-duty.

Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910. One Christmas, he hired a local knifemaker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939. By
2003, the company employed 300 people and had revenues near $100 million, and was the second leading seller of multi-tools in the United States, trailing just behind Leatherman.
Gerber has influenced the knife and multi-tool market by making use of new technologies and materials mostly found in custom or one-off premium brand knives, such as Zytel handles, Kraton handles, ATS 34 and AUS 8 high carbon stainless steels, and titanium nitride coatings.

In the 70 years since the company’s inception, the quality of Gerber’s blades and reputation has become legendary. Many active duty military and rescue personnel rely on Gerber blades to get the job done.

Multi-Tools: Glock

The Austrian gun company Glock set out to build the perfect Army knife for the Austrian Army. To that end, they first considered all possible uses: defense, survival, emergency and utility. This fixed blade knife does it all.
The Glock knife features a 6-1/2 inch, non-reflective, carbon steel, clip point blade. At 3/16” thick, the blade is perfectly balanced in your hand. When holding this knife, it feels almost like an extension of your own body. Clearly balance, fit and finish were at the forefront of the designers’ minds.

The polymer handle and hilt are made of the same material as the lower receiver on your Glock pistol. The polymer is nearly indestructible, and can easily break a car window to free an accident victim. The one-piece polymer sheath has a stout little clip that will secure your Glock knife to your belt, whether you’re running down a wooded ridge or swimming across a river. The knife and sheath are one color, available in olive drab, desert sand, or flat black.

If you have to rely on only one field knife to serve all your needs, this is the knife to get.

Multi-Tools: Ka-Bar

Ka-Bar Fighting Knives are an American legend, and have been used by US forces in every conflict from WWII onward. They've proven their battle readiness and are as solid as the country they have defended.

Each knife undergoes specific manufacturing processes to ensure corrosion resistance, strength, edge holding ability,
and an out-of-the-box razor sharp edge. The KA-BAR  blades feature a moderate carbon and low chromium steel mixture that allows the blade to hold an edge exceptionally well.

There have been many versions of how the KA-BAR name came to be, but all the evidence points to a letter received from a fur trapper somewhere in the early 1920’s. The  trapper’s story became the most important one ever received by the KA-BAR company.
The legendary KA-BAR went on to see service in WWII, Korea, VietNam, and Iraq. The KA BAR knife was originally conceived as a hunting knife in 1898, but in 1942, not long after the United States got into WW II, American troops ran into problems with the knife they were issued, the M1917 and M1918, and KA-BAR knives were chosen from a hunting catalog. The final shape of the knife was decided on by the Marine Corps.

The KA-BAR knife is a perfect survival tool, and it serves its utility well. Each knife is perfectly balanced, and ground to a surgical edge, with a stacked-leather or glass-filled nylon handle that insures a solid grip every time..

KA-BAR knives have been serving hunters, outdoorsmen, and military personnel for over 100 years. KA-BAR is an American  legend.

Multi-Tools: Kershaw

With very high production quality assurance, and a focus on bang for the buck, Kershaw continues to be a strong contender in the tactical folding knife industry. Kershaw Knife was started in Portland, Oregon, when knife salesman
Pete Kershaw left Gerber Legendary Blades to start his own company, based on his own designs. Currently, Kershaw is headquartered in Taulatin, Oregon. Pete Kershaw is still the president of the company.
Kershaw knives are known for their extremely sharp tips and quality steel. The actions on some Kershaw knives are even “speedsafe”, or “assisted opening”, which means there is a spring or torsion bar that assists with the action of the blade opening. Often, with just a little practice, the average Joe can open his Kershaw knife as fast as a switchblade, yet the speedsafe assisted opening is legal. A switchblade is not.

The lead knife designer at Kershaw, Ken Onion, has won numerous awards for his designs with the company since 1998, and is responsible for the innovative speedsafe design. Kershaw has also collaborated with custom knife makers such as Grant and Gavin Hawk, Frank Centofante, and Ernest Emerson, with whom Kershaw is partnering to produce an automatic version of Emerson’s Commander.

Multi-Tools: Leatherman

Tim Leatherman is a 1970 graduate of Oregon State University and a mechanical engineer. According to a story in the Oregonian, Tim Leatherman came up with the idea for a “boyscout knife with
pliers” when traveling through Europe with his wife, and having to repeatedly fix his rental car.  Leatherman conceived the idea, refined it, and made models of it, with an eye toward eventually manufacturing it.

Since 1983, Tim Leatherman’s Oregon based company has been making tough, versitile multi-tools. Like anything new, it took a while to catch on, but once it did, the Leatherman Multi-Tool following grew exponentially.  You will see Leatherman multi-tools on the belts of police, firemen, soldiers, repairmen and hobbyists of all kinds.

Leatherman tools are made entirely In Portland, Oregon, USA, and are held to the highest standards of quality and durability. And, with each new product Leatherman releases, brings about even more usefulness and innovation.

All Leatherman multi-tools incorporate a pliers, screwdrivers and blades. There are also new models that feature L.E.D. flashlights, hacksaws, and files.

It seems that whatever you throw at it, a Leatherman tool can handle the job.

Multi-Tools: Outdoor Edge

Since time immemorial, man has used tools, and has strived to improve those tools. From the first wheel, mankind has sought to make it more smooth and round.

As time evolves, tools become more specialized. That is the case with simple tools like the wheel, and it is also true with the knife.

Outdoor Edge knives are such examples of specialization. The folks at
Outdoor Edge knives make specialty tool kits to serve the needs of the big game hunter and fisherman. These kits make the dressing and skinning of big game much easier. Outdoor Edge also makes knives to fit the needs of the game fisherman. Properly cleaning and de-boning fish requires a long, thin, sharp blade. Outdoor Edge makes just such blades, and the company field tests each blade, in both hunting and fishing contexts, to make sure they’re up to the task.
As any environmentally conscious hunter or fisherman knows, the meat of the killed or caught game should be properly processed, preserved, and eaten. Here in the Midwest for instance, there is little that compares to venison jerky, walleye fillets, or goose stew. Many an Outdoor Edge knife has contributed to these tasty dishes, and will most likely continue to.

Outdoor Edge constantly strives to bring outdoorsmen the best and most reliable of knives, in order to get the most out of their hunting or fishing outing, and the most out of their kill or catch.

Mult-Tools: Remington

As America’s oldest firearms manufacturer, Remington also makes knives. Remington rifles and shotguns are all made in the United States, and so are Remington knives. Actually, Remington knives are made by knife industry giant Camillus in their New York factory.

Remington started out making top quality knives in the early 1920’s, and ever since their initial inception, Remington knives have been prized by shooters, sportsmen, carpenters and craftsmen alike for their functional design, unsurpassed workmanship, and first-rate materials.

The most important variable in any knife is the steel used to forge it. Remington blade steel is forged, hardened and tempered entirely in American steel mills, before being hand-honed to a razor sharp cutting edge.

The handles of Remington knives are milled from high quality materials. They allow for a firm grip, and are designed not to crack under the most extreme of conditions. Like the blades they are attached to, the handles are designed to look beautiful and last a lifetime.

Remington knives are built to stand the test of time, and are often handed down through generations.

Multi-Tools: SOG

There is one brand of knife that is on the duty belts of more Special Forces operators than most any other, on missions all around the globe. That brand is SOG. SOG is actually an acronym that originally stood for Studies and Observation Group, which was an elite, joint-services, military group that was
tasked with performing special operations, recon patrols, and intelligence gathering during the Viet Nam war.

It was during this era that SOG knives initially became extremely popular among elite military operators
such as the Navy Seals, the Army Special Forces, and Marine Long Range Reconnaissance (LRRPS), due to the fact that SOG knives are purposely created, from drawing board to milling lathe, to be used in some of the harshest conditions on planet Earth.

At SOG, they believe that details make the difference between magic and mediocrity; that the whole can become greater than the sum of the parts. It shows in each knife.

For that reason, the engineers at SOG are constantly striving to make even the tiniest detail even better, and for over 20 years, they’ve been shattering the status quo by never settling for the ordinary.

In the minds of many who wear the Green Beret, the Seal Eagle and Trident, and the LRRP tab, SOG knives are some of the best blades out there.

Multi-Tools: Wyoming Knife

Let’s be honest. Among knife enthusiasts, there are two basic types. One type is the guys who collect knives, and will buy a fancy knife just because they like it, or because it looks “cool”. Then there is the other type of guys: usually serious hunters, who buy a knife simply to use the hell out of it. That second type of guys are the ones who will genuinely appreciate what Wyoming knives has to offer.

Wyoming knives and saws, plain and simple, are designed for field dressing big game. Like deer, bear, antelope and elk. They do that one thing; field dress game, and they do it very, very well.

Ergonomically, the knives and saws from Wyoming Knives are comfortable in the hand, and the blade angles are perfect for the utility they are designed to serve: processing big game. If you hunt big game, you’ll appreciate the way Wyoming Knives can be manipulated to cut only the part of the hide that you wish to cut, limiting potential for over-penetration. In fact the razor-sharp, angled blades from Wyoming Knives are capable of such precision cuts that even a surgeon would be proud.

One of the biggest advantages of using Wyoming knives to field-dress your game after the hunt is that they allow you to get the most meat for your freezer or smokehouse, virtually eliminating waste.

If you’re a serious big game hunter, Wyoming Knives are the serious tools you need.
